Next week, on June 4th, you will be tasked with the important act of voting in South Dakota’s primary election, where we will choose legislative nominees, school board members, county commission races, and more. Then, on November 5th, we will cast final decisions for legislative nominees from both parties, and ultimately choose our next president. Are you ready?
In some sense, we all know the importance of voting – choosing the officials who will represent us in local, state and federal office and make decisions on our behalf. If we want a say in how our government runs, the first step is voting. But have you ever considered our obligation to vote from a Biblical perspective of stewardship?
In America, we are blessed to live in a Democratic Republic, where our values are represented and our voice matters. God has given us a form of government where we can work to improve our society and build moral foundations. Do you recall the parable of the three servants who were each entrusted with bags of gold while their master went on a journey (Matthew 25:14-30)? Two servants invested their gold and saw generous returns, but the third dug a hole and hid the gold in the ground.
Couldn’t it be said that if we take the country we have been given, and improve it to benefit the lives of our neighbors, we have acted in a similar fashion to the servants who doubled the master’s money? And in the same fashion, if we refuse to engage in our culture or work to improve our communities, it could be said of us that we acted similar to the servant who simply buried the money and gave it back later.
Don’t we all want to hear what the responsible servants heard from their master, in Matthew 25:21?
“Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!”
